Hypothetical Interview Questions

From both the candidate and interviewer perspective, I hate hypothetical interview questions. I just don't think they provide value to the interviewer, as it's all "best case scenario". I'd much rather hear about the challenging, gritty, real situations someone has been in even if they didn't handle it perfectly. As a candidate, I hate them because I feel like I need more context to truly give the interviewer what they're looking for (I like to have ALL the data 😆).

If you're asked a hypothetical question that is similar to a real situation you've been in, try asking the interviewer if you can give them that example. Of course they may say no, but I think they'd be excited that you've actually dealt with something similar to what they're asking. You can always offer to circle back on the hypothetical question after, if helpful.

Don't let these questions trip you up, especially if you're new to interviewing. The interviewer is just trying to understand how you solve a problem with limited resources, or what steps you'd take as a product manager (for this specific example). If you don't have professional experience to lean back on, think about how you led projects in school or extracurricular activities.

How do you feel about hypothetical questions?
