Fear & Interviews - A Vicious Cycle
Does this look familiar? All of my job seeking clients have described this to me in one way or another - they get an interview, they're scared, it impacts their performance and what comes next? They don't get the role, so they need to do more interviews and start over. The more negative experiences they have, their confidence decreases and the more vicious this cycle becomes.
⠀
I was listening to the book Chatter by Ethan Kross (highly recommend!) and he gave an example of someone suffering from a similar mental loop- it's so common. One tip he had was to reframe it as a challenge rather than a threat. It can be challenging to figure out how that might work for you (and I'm still working my way through the book 😉) , so I wanted to share a few tactical tips that may help with this.
⠀
- Build your Confidence - What activities help build confidence for you? For me, that's usually doing a really tough workout. Think of something that always makes you feel good about yourself afterward- it could even be doing a volunteer shift somewhere or mentoring someone. Try to incorporate something daily that reminds you how awesome you are.
⠀
- Practice - If you keep interviewing, you'll feel more comfortable over time. If you want to speed up the process, try mock interviews. They're a great way to get more comfortable at low risk and get some feedback along the way. DM me for more info!
⠀
- Connect to your Strengths - When I view things as a challenge rather than a threat, I think of putting on my strength of Competition almost like I would a sweater. It's a mindset shift where I just want to do my best in order to compete with other potential candidates. Is one of your strengths being Analytical? Think about the role and its challenges and geek out with interviewers about the problems they're having and how you could hep solve them. Are you a Relator? Think of the interview as an opportunity to assess whether you could work closely with this group of people. (Have no idea what your strengths are? Check out Gallup Strengths Finder!)

Have you been stuck in this cycle? What have you been scared of when it comes to interviews? What have you done to combat it? Let me know!
