Assessing Ability to Navigate Ambiguous Situations in Interviews
If a new hire is stepping into a role that is undefined or won't have a lot of support, they may be asked interview questions about navigating ambiguous situations. This can be tricky to assess in an interview, but asking for an example of a time they had to act quickly without much information to make an important decision is a good place to start. For hiring managers, this can also directly inform ramp up plans for new hires, making plans for specific areas of coaching you're able to identify from their answer to this question.

For job seekers, I always recommend sharing the biggest scope example you can think of, even if results weren't perfect, and walking the interviewer through your problem solving process with quite a bit of detail. It's important to demonstrate that this process didn't cause any major delays, and to avoid situations where you had to get a lot of help from others to move forward. This example should really highlight your ability to answer your own questions and use the resources available to make progress.

I can think of some interview loops where I wish I had asked this question! 😜 How about you?
