Set Boundaries at Work
πI learned this the hard way. I went from working 90+ hour work weeks at a digital agency and answering calls about websites in Japan being down at 3 am, to never having work email on my phone for the 6 years I worked as a Sr. PM at Amazon. Your to do list is never going to end, and everyone but you benefits from you doing too much, no one is going to protect you or set boundaries for you. The only way to get ahead of burnout is to be as clear as possible with your intentions and boundaries in your role.
β
The ideal time to do this is to when you interview or start your new role. Talk to your manager and team to communicate your expectations and how you work best. You'll find out very quickly if team expectations are misaligned and can sort things out before miscommunication happens.
