Can’t Remember Details?

My interview coaching clients often tell me they're having a hard time remembering situations from their past roles with the amount of detail interviewers expect when asking behavioral interview questions. Here are some simple tips to try to jog your memory- chances are you'll have an easier time than you might expect.

📒 Look through old emails*, notebooks, documentation - Dig through any and all artifacts you've held onto from a past role (and if you don't have any- start documenting your current role now so you have something to look at later!). You'll stumble upon something you've forgotten about that may be a good example during an interview.
🖼Look at pictures on your phone from that time period - Flip through pictures on your phone to remember what was going on, or catch up with a friend you used to work or hang out with at that time. The visual and social aspects may help give you an extra memory boost.
🛀Relax and take a break, then come back - It's scientifically proven that anxiety doesn't help your memory. If you're putting too much pressure on yourself or are super nervous, you may be forgetting examples that would easily come to mind otherwise. Do something that helps you relax or zone out, then come back and do some stream of consciousness journaling to see if you can shake more examples out.

Are there other methods that have successfully jogged your memory?

*HR caveat- depending on your previous role and company, it may be illegal to hold on to your old emails and/or documents. Looking at personal emails from that time period may be just as helpful. Use your best judgment.
