Lunchclub & Clubhouse

Have you tried Lunchclub or Clubhouse? I’ve spent the past few weeks checking out the two invite-only social media platforms to see what they’re like. Here are my quick Pros and Cons of each.

Lunchclub: Networking platform where you can sign up for 45 min meetings with new contacts, based on your interests and intentions. Seems to work well for business development or just meeting new people.

Pros:

  • Deeper, more meaningful conversations

  • Multiple days/time slots to choose from

  • They say it’s an algorithm, but each connection has been so relevant it makes me wonder if that’s really the case (in a good way!)

Cons:

  • 45 minutes is a large time investment with just one person (you can always end early if you both want to)

  • No evening time slots after 5 pm - since my only free time is nap time and after my toddler goes to bed, I’m limited to weekends for taking meetings

Clubhouse: Social Media platform that can feel a bit like the wild west of AOL chat rooms where anyone can moderate a room about any topic and many others can join the discussion.

Pros:

  • The sky’s the limit in terms of topics and rooms - start a room about anything you want, or find a room about anything you’re interested in

  • Quickly expand your social network by connecting with new people over shared interests

  • Good way to learn via free coaching or information sessions

Cons:

  • Need to use critical thinking skills to determine if the person you’re listening to is credible and worth your time - some rooms or groups are related to MLMs, can feel like a scam or are just inauthentic

  • Can be hard to filter - you are recommended rooms based on your interests and who you follow, or you can look at the whole list, it’s HUGE and International. It’s taken longer to look for interesting rooms to join than the amount of time I actually spent getting value out of the room. Hoping they are developing better ways to quickly narrow down what’s available

  • Accessibility - only currently available on the iPhone app, more difficult for users who are hard of hearing (though I was in a cool room discussing tips for accessibility on Clubhouse that mentioned some outside functionality than can help!)

Want to join ether of these platforms but don’t have an invite? Let me know- I’m happy to send you one!
