Be Yourself

True Story. This is a throwback to my reel about how getting a job isn't always linear - my first full time job where I went through 3 months of mostly waiting, a couple of interviews and following up weekly before receiving an offer. 😬

I was in my 2nd in-person interview with a panel of 5 people, and after we had been talking for a bit, one of them asked if I had looked at the company's website. At this point, I knew it inside and out, but hadn't looked at it in a couple of weeks because I was frustrated I hadn't heard back. I was pretty sure I could speak to it, but also knew I could have missed any recent updates.

The company I was interviewing with was creative, and I knew they would appreciate both my candor and sense of humor. After I said this and got a laugh, I was vulnerable and told them I really wanted the role but it had been a long 3 months of follow up so I didn't want to torture myself by looking at their website anymore. They apologized for the situation and thanked me for my persistence. One of the interviewers was still quoting what I said years after I started at the company - she loved it.

So what's the point? In an interview always read the room, know your audience, be yourself, and be honest. The worst thing that can happen is that someone doesn't like what you have to say, and in that case you probably wouldn't be a good fit for the role or working with them anyway. 🤷‍♀️
