“Above and Beyond” In Job Interviews

"Above and Beyond" is one of those phrases that can mean different things to people. When you think of an example for your next interview, run it by an objective friend or family member for feedback - you may be considering something "Above and Beyond" just because you liked the project and want to talk about it.

To know if you've picked the right example, make sure:
- You know the level of work expected of the position you're applying for and this example highlights your capability to perform at that level
- You have data that demonstrates how you overdelivered on what was expected
- Your decision or work (not your manager's or coworker's) is what made it "Above and Beyond" for your customers

Hiring Managers, if the candidate you're interviewing isn't giving you an example at the right scope or not quite "Above and Beyond" enough, ask them why they consider it above and beyond as a follow up. If it's not what you're looking for, ask if they have another example to share. Don't assume they just don't have one, it's important to make sure you're using the same operational definition for "Above and Beyond."

What's "Above and Beyond" to you? Have you struggled with this question in the past? Let me know!
