To Get the Job You Want, You May Need to Break Some “Interview Rules”

Every time I see someone post something like "you HAVE to do this to get a job" or "you CAN'T do that and get the job", I roll my eyes. Context and individualization are important and not every "rule" will work for everyone and every role. I'm not about keeping you fearful about the hiring process or preying on that fear - my goal is to empower you to show up and be your best in an interview, no matter where you are in the hiring process.

There are very few rules I will tell you to follow in a job interview setting. Most of the rules I do stick to are around being kind, true to yourself, honest, crafting meaningful conversations and actual laws, of course. 😜

Sometimes the ways I've "broken the rules" have turned into tips I've shared because they resonate with others. Here are some examples from just my first entry level role:
- I applied for a job that didn't exist (yet 😉)
- I followed up with the hiring manager at least a couple times a week for two months when I didn't hear back from her
- In my last interview, I flat-out told them that I hadn't looked at the website recently because I really wanted the role and it was too sad

Context is important- I wouldn't recommend you go out and do these because I did and it worked! 😂 You have to read the room, know your audience, what you want and what you bring to the table. Need help navigating your specific situation? Always feel free to reach out!

Have you ever broken any "interview rules"? Let me know!
