Interviewer Pet Peeves
These are my pet peeves as an interviewer, in no particular order. They may seem a little obvious at first glance, but I experience these often. 🤷‍♀Check out more detail below.
â €
1. Overprepared- It's great to go into an interview confidently, but sounding like you're following a script or providing rigid examples is not what I'm looking for. The interview should feel like a conversation, where I can get a sense of how you would fit in the role. Sometimes overpreparation can also lead to tripping up or getting too in your head about responses, or can result in #2...
â €
2. Not Answering Questions- I'm asking these specific questions and follow ups for a reason. It's okay to go on a slight tangent, but if I'm leading you back to my original question, please answer it as best you can. If you don't have a good answer, just say so, we can take another route to get to what I'm looking for.
â €
3. Lack of Respect- Please assume the person interviewing you is qualified and the right person to do so. I have seen a wide range of disrespect from candidates, from smirking or yawning during my overview of my experience all the way to asking, "why are YOU interviewing me?". Even if you don't seem to be jiving with the interviewer, try to make the most out of your time together and respect the time they're taking out of their busy day to talk to you.

Keep these in mind for your next interview, your interviewer will silently thank you. 🙏
