3 Steps to In-Depth Interviews

Someone recently asked me how they could easily improve their hiring skills if their main concern was that their gut was "off" when interviewing candidates. The best way for me to provide feedback would be to shadow someone in a real interview, but without the time or ability to do that, here were my tips to imitate that "gut" instinct you get only from experience. The goal of an in-depth interview is to gather a large quantity of objective data you can use to make your hiring decision.

* Show Genuine Interest: It's important to go into the interview with a genuine interest in getting to know the candidate, even if they aren't a fit for the role. A friendly, conversational approach is the best way to help them open up to provide more information, and also have a great experience talking to you.

*Ask 2-3 High-Level Questions Related to Critical Requirements: Identify your 2-3 top priority requirements for the role beyond functional skills and tailor your questions accordingly. Limiting the number of overarching questions allows your conversation to flow and for you to get the detail you need from a candidate's responses.

* Extract Detail with Follow Up: Ask as many follow ups as you need to understand the who, what, when, where, why, impact, etc, in the candidate's responses to your questions. Follow your intuition and see where the conversation takes you.

Is this different than your interview approach? Need help fine tuning your hiring process? Looking forward to helping you out!
